If you are in my English III classes, please read the four articles included in the Room for Debate section entitled What is a College Degree Worth in China? When finished reading choose one to post a comment about.
You might have to create an account to access this section, but I don't think being able to read The New York Times online is such a bad thing.

| Workers at a toy factory in China |

Well I have heard the same thing about America, I heard that Ivy League college graduates are facing unemployment. So what's the point of even going to college anymore? I think that kids should be having more hands on education not just shut up in rooms all day listening and taking notes then spitting that information back out to ace the test. People should take time to learn a skill because that will most likely be more valuable in the long run. We were not all made to be million aires...
ReplyDeleteI read Few Promising Opportunities for China's College Graduates. Well if I was a student in China I would try to pick up on the fact that it's wasteful to go to college. It's so interesting to see how the education system is working backwards than in our country. I have always view college as a very beneficial for a career and never would have thought it could get worse jobs. I guess the U.S. isn't going to have to worry about China becoming a super power if what they predict is true. I wonder that if companies move out of China prices of toys and everything else we import from them will skyrocket. Very interesting though. Lots of things to think about.
ReplyDeleteOn High Test Scores , Low Ability:
ReplyDeleteThis is so unbelievably true. Schools, especially I feel in America drill test scores and are so focused on our passing than our love for learning. We have been taught to focus on passing our tests, so we stress out trying to learn these things when really we hate it and would rather spend our time learning about something else. Test scores drive our education all over the world, and it needs to be changed.
I thought it was intersting to apply these ideas to our school systems here. We have al lot of the same problems, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteGreat thoughts. As a teacher I am always trying to find a balance between making sure that students have a solid base of knowledge combined with the ability to do well on tests such as the SAT and ACT. It is a difficult balance to keep considering the pressures put upon public schools to demonstrated student "performance."
